Plans to Demolish 12 Purpose Built Flats

Letter to Nework Members from CDP.

18th October 2005

Dear Network Members

I am writing to you on behalf of the residents of Swanswell Street. As you may already be aware from recent newspaper articles in the Coventry Telegraph and radio interviews plans are allegedly afoot to demolish 12 purpose built flats, that have been the homes of a number of Disabled people since they were built only ten years ago, to make way for a new City College.

Some tenants, including one of our network members are distraught at the thought that anyone should consider taking away their home.

From my understanding, having spoken to tenants nobody has spoken to them officially about these plans either from the Housing association who own the properties or the Council yet it appears that things have gone as far as the Council looking to apply for a compulsory purchase order on the flats.

As many of you will already know from your own personal experiences there is very little in the way of accessible properties in Coventry and many Disabled people are already inappropriately housed and have been sitting on a waiting list to be offered a home for years in some cases, so why should these people accept being forced from their homes , simply to be forced into a property they most likely don't want and won't meet their needs in an area they do not want to live in.

The tenants would be grateful for any support you can provide and are asking that you attend a meeting outside the Council House on the 1st November at 4.30pm to lobby councillors.

If you disagree with how these people are being treated then please come along to lend your support.

If you would like to find out more please feel free to email me.

Tony
